Structures and Mechanisms

Have you ever thought "Hey man, who built that crazy tall building, and how did they do it"? Of course you have. But how did they do it? How do they make sure that it won't fall down? How do they know how to make it so strong?

Structures are designed to be much stronger than they need to be, in order to survive things that we don't expect to happen, but might.

Structures are built using everyday shapes and simple machines like pulleys (2 3 4 5), levers, gears,(2 3 4 5 6) wheels and axles, inclined planes, screws and wedges. The most common shapes to use are squares, rectangles and triangles. Triangles and arches are the strongest shape. You can find triangles everywhere! Even in the design of roller coasters (1 2 3 4 5)!

Before we build a skyscraper, we have to use a crane. Cranes are made of squares and triangles. Mobile cranes are on the backs of large trucks and can be moved to where they are needed. Tower cranes are built from the ground up and are much larger and more dangerous than mobile cranes. Tower cranes are needed to build the world's tallest skyscrapers.

There are many very tall buildings on our planet. Some of the tallest include the Q1 in Surfers Paradise Australia, the CN Tower in Toronto and the Burj Dubai in Dubai. These structures need to be very stable in order to stay standing. The CN Tower can withstand winds up to 300km per hour before it gets damaged. Cool!
.
Bridges are also strong and stable structures. There are many different kinds of bridges. Some are arches, some are cable-stayed, some are suspension. The largest arch bridge in the world will be built in Dubai. It is very important to build bridges properly because we don't want them to fall down! Some bridge building techniques are thousands of years old.

Aircraft are often needed to build large structures. They can be used to transport building materials, workers and supplies. Aircraft are also structures themselves. They are flying structures! Aircraft have been in use for over one hundred years. They have many uses, from construction to transportation to entertainment. Sometimes the ultimate luxury can only be found in the sky...

Freedom

Everything is meaningless without freedom. Would it matter if you had a million dollars but couldn't use it? Would it matter if you had the best idea in the world but couldn't tell anyone? Freedom is what every person really wants. It's amazing!

We are lucky to live in Canada because we have so many freedoms. We are able to say what we want, live where we want to live, wear what we want to wear, go where we want to go, and be the religion that we want to be. We are the lucky ones.

There are millions of people around the world still living in slavery today. There are still some countries where people are put in jail for speaking out against their government. There are some government leaders who try to convince other leaders to make their countries more free. There are also concerned citizens who use their positions to help others who are less fortunate.

But what is freedom really?

Some people say freedom is simply a nice day in the sunshine. Some say it's a bike ride. Some people say it is the ability to make your own choices and be who you want to be. Maybe it's just being able to say what's on your mind. Maybe it's giving up all your things and stuff and living the simple life.

Humans are not the only creatures who want freedom. Animals also deserve to live happy lives. Imagine if you had to live your life in a cage. Wouldn't you rather be able to fly, run around, explore and have fun? Of course you would!

Never take your freedom for granted! It's the most important thing in the world!

Determination

Determination means not backing down and trying hard. Even when you fail. That's how you get better. Even the most talented people have failed. It's part of being human!

How have you shown determination in your life? Have you ever stuck with something, even when it was hard? Like, really, really, REALLY hard? If you did, then you were very determined for sure.

Every person can be determined, but it is hard. We want to give up when things get difficult. But when the going gets tough, the tough get going! Everyone, from regular people in our community to famous athletes, all show determination. Why do they do it? Because you can do whatever you say that you can do and no one can tell you that you can't. If you want something badly enough, you will make it happen. Just ask the people who know Rick Hoyt and his father.

Sometimes people say "What are you thinking, bro? You must be crazy, sis! Your body can't do THAT!" With training, you can do crazy things.

Animals show determination too. And when animals are determined, nothing can stop them!! How would you feel if you were in a cage? Would you want to get out? If you needed to climb over a wall, would you quit if it was hard? What if you couldn't move properly? Would you just sit there and sulk or would you find a new way to get around?

Some countries try to bully other countries. Canada is determined to show others that they can't bully us. When other countries try to do things that are not right, we are determined to tell them to Simma Down Now! We won't be bullied!

When people get together and are determined as a group, there is really nothing that we can't do. It took the determination of thousands of people to enable people to land on the moon. It took determination for Canada to build the mechanical arms for the space shuttles and the International Space Station. It took a great deal of determination to land rovers on Mars. And it will take even more determination for people to finally land on Mars (part 2) (part 3) (part 4) (part 5)

Stay strong, be determined, and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something. If you say you can, you'll show THEM, man!
